Wisconsin voters have decisively approved an amendment to their state constitution, necessitating voter ID at the polls. The measure passed with about 70% of voters in favor, underscoring widespread support for reinforcing election security in the state.

Decision Desk HQ projected the passage of Wisconsin Question 1, which pertained to embedding voter ID requirements into the state constitution. Their announcement was made at 9:18 PM EDT on April 2, 2025.

Question 1 on the ballot sought to amend the constitution to mandate voter photo identification. This measure, while widely supported by Americans generally, has encountered resistance from some left-leaning groups and media networks.

The constitutional change allows the Wisconsin State Legislature to define acceptable ID forms and any exceptions. According to current rules, those without valid ID on Election Day can cast provisional ballots, which are counted once valid ID is presented later.

By making voter ID a constitutional requirement, any future changes or removals would require a new constitutional amendment, raising the bar beyond a simple legislative majority. The forms of ID accepted for voting in Wisconsin include a driver's license, military ID, passport, tribal ID, and certain student IDs, among others.

Donald Trump urged voters on Truth Social to support Question 1, linking it to other election integrity initiatives.

Support for voter ID laws in Wisconsin is high, with a 2021 Marquette University Law School poll showing 74% approval among registered voters, cutting across party lines. Nationally, a 2024 Gallup poll indicated 84% of Americans back such measures.
