President Trump has revoked the security clearances of 51 former intelligence officials and former National Security Advisor John Bolton. This decision follows allegations that these individuals misled the public about Hunter Biden's laptop during the 2020 presidential campaign, suggesting it was part of a Russian disinformation effort.
The executive order signed by Trump highlights the involvement of these officials in what is described as "misleading and inappropriate political coordination" with the Biden campaign. The letter they issued had claimed that reports on Hunter Biden's laptop were influenced by Russian disinformation, which led to censorship on social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube.
The order also addresses John Bolton's memoir, which allegedly contained sensitive information from his time in government. The publication is said to have posed a risk of exposing classified material.
Trump's directive mandates the revocation of any active or current security clearances held by those involved in this matter. Among those affected are James Clapper, Michael Hayden, Leon Panetta, John Brennan, and Michael Morell.
In addition to revoking clearances, the order calls for a report within 90 days detailing any further inappropriate activities within the Intelligence Community related to this issue. It also suggests potential disciplinary actions against those involved.
Antony Blinken has been named as being directly involved in orchestrating the letter according to testimony from former CIA Deputy Director Michael Morell. However, Blinken denied such involvement in an interview with FOX News stating: “It wasn’t my idea, didn’t ask for it, didn’t solicit it.”
This move by President Trump marks one of several executive actions taken since returning to office. Other actions include withdrawing from the World Health Organization and reversing various executive orders made by President Joe Biden.
