A recent CNN poll reveals that the Democratic Party is experiencing its lowest ratings in over three decades. Conducted by SSRS Opinion Panel for CNN, the survey highlights that many individuals on the right see supporting former President Donald Trump as essential to being a Republican.

The findings indicate that 58% of Democrats and Democrat-leaning independents believe their party requires "major changes, or to be completely reformed." This marks an increase from 34% who held this view after the 2022 midterm elections.

CNN reports a decrease in Republicans and Republican leaners feeling similarly about the GOP, with figures dropping from 38% to 28%.

The report also states: "Only 49% of Democratic-aligned adults say they expect their party’s congressional representatives to be even somewhat effective at resisting GOP policies, while more than 9 in 10 Republican-aligned adults expect their party’s congressional representatives — who now control both chambers of Congress — to be at least somewhat effective at passing new laws to enact their agenda."

Discontent spans across party lines, with most U.S. adults describing themselves as disappointed (70%) and frustrated (64%) with current politics. Nearly half feel burned out, and around four in ten express anger—52% among Democratic-aligned women. Less than 20% report feeling optimistic, fired up, inspired, or proud.

Only 23% of registered voters are satisfied with their influence on the political process, down from 38% last autumn. About half of all adults (48%) are confident elections reflect the people's will—an increase from previous years' low readings. Confidence has shifted along partisan lines following Trump's electoral victory, rising among Republican-aligned adults from 29% in July 2023 to 67%, but falling among Democratic-aligned adults from 59% to 39%.

Across the political spectrum, only one-third of Americans hold a favorable opinion of the Democratic Party—the lowest since CNN began polling in this area in 1992.

The survey was conducted through web and telephone by SSRS Opinion Panel using probability-based sampling techniques. It took place January 9-12, 2025, involving a nationally representative sample of U.S. adults aged 18 or older. The sample size was n=1,205 respondents with a margin of error of +/-3.2 at a confidence level of 95%.
