German Ambassador to the United States, Andreas Michaelis, has come under scrutiny following the leak of a diplomatic cable in which he expresses concerns about the implications of Donald J. Trump's second presidential term. The cable, reported by multiple German media outlets, outlines potential threats to US democracy as perceived by Michaelis.

According to Deutsche Welle, the five-page report was sent to the German Foreign Ministry and Chancellor Olaf Scholz's office. In it, Michaelis warns that Trump's administration could pose "serious threats to the system of democratic checks and balances outlined in the US constitution." He further elaborates that fundamental democratic principles may be undermined, with law enforcement and media independence compromised, and big tech companies gaining co-governing authority.

The ambassador predicts that Trump will centralize power at the expense of Congress and state authorities. Michaelis writes that Trump's approach is one of "maximum disruption," potentially redefining the constitutional order through revenge-driven policies.

Despite these concerns, the German Foreign Ministry has refrained from commenting on internal documents but emphasized that the United States remains one of Germany's most important allies.

The leaked document was initially shared with news agency dpa and has since been disseminated among other German media outlets such as Bild newspaper. As Michaelis prepares to represent Germany at Trump's inauguration, his candid observations continue to stir discussions on both sides of the Atlantic.
