The Palisades wildfire, which ignited on Tuesday, has reached the Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles, California. This area is home to several notable figures, including Vice President Kamala Harris. The fire has already consumed over 22,000 acres across Pacific Palisades and Malibu, marking it as the most destructive wildfire in Los Angeles history.
Combined with other fires in the region, more than 37,000 acres and at least 12,000 structures have been destroyed. The death toll stands at eleven people, with at least thirteen individuals reported missing according to Fox 11.
Ernie Apreza, Harris's press secretary, confirmed that her neighborhood was under an evacuation order. "Last night, the Vice President’s neighborhood in Los Angeles was put under an evacuation order. No one was in her home at the time. She and the Second Gentleman are praying for the safety of their fellow Californians, the heroic first responders, and Secret Service personnel," he stated.
New evacuations were ordered Friday night as wildfires spread further towards Downtown Los Angeles. A local resident named Ari expressed concerns about the fire potentially reaching Bel Air if it crosses over the 405 freeway corridor.
NBA player LeBron James and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger also reside in this affected area. LeBron James shared his thoughts on social media: "I pray this nightmare ends soon! So many prayers."
In a briefing on Thursday regarding the fires, President Joe Biden made a remark to Harris saying “Fire away! No pun intended!” while discussing the situation.
