The DeKalb County School District (DCSD) has been informed by the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement (GOSA) that a list of schools meeting the criteria for the Georgia Promise Scholarship Act will be published on their website. The program, signed into law in 2024, allocates $140 million to allow eligible students to use public funds for non-public education expenses from Kindergarten through 12th grade starting in fall 2025.
GOSA stated that the qualifying schools were identified by averaging single score calculations from the 2023 and 2024 academic years, using data provided by the Georgia Department of Education. Within this framework, 44 schools from the DeKalb County School District have been included.
Dr. Devon Q. Horton, Superintendent of DCSD, commented on this development: “Vouchers do not necessarily lead to improved academic performance. Over the past year, we have worked diligently to rebuild relationships with our parents and have implemented numerous programs and initiatives to strengthen our schools." Dr. Horton also highlighted DCSD's own educational offerings: "The DeKalb County School District also offers our students a wide range of excellent in-county educational options through our Student Choice Program. Recent positive results from state and national assessments show that DCSD is making significant progress in improving student academic performance.”
For those interested in applying for DCSD’s School Choice Program, late applications will be accepted between January 3-17, 2025. More details can be found at dekalbschoolsga.org/school-choice/
