On February 18, 2025, a report emerged highlighting concerns over untraceable federal spending. The Gateway Pundit noted that Elon Musk's DOGE team revealed the federal government had not traced $4.7 trillion in payments. According to DOGE, these payments were left blank, making them nearly impossible to trace.
DOGE explained that "The Treasury Access Symbol (TAS) is an identification code linking a Treasury payment to a budget line item (standard financial process)." They further stated, "In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible. As of Saturday, this is now a required field, increasing insight into where money is actually going. Thanks to US Treasury for the great work."
This revelation has sparked discussions about transparency and accountability in government spending. President Trump and Elon Musk have previously announced that DOGE will cut $1 trillion from the deficit this year.
Critics question why there is not more outrage over these findings compared to other political issues.
