Several years ago, comedian Adam Carolla shared an experience where he applied to become a firefighter in Los Angeles but was told he would have to wait years to take the test due to being a white male. This incident has resurfaced amid ongoing criticism of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) policies.
Carolla recounted his story during Congressional testimony eight years ago. He explained that after graduating from North Hollywood High with a 1.7 GPA and struggling to find employment, he approached a fire station at the age of 19 seeking work. "I was living in the garage of my family home and my mom was on welfare and food stamps," Carolla said. However, he claimed he was informed that because he wasn't black, Hispanic, or female, he would need to wait seven years before taking the examination.
Carolla also described an encounter with a young woman of color who signed up for the firefighter test just days before him. “Just out of curiosity, when did you sign up to become a fireman?” Carolla asked her. She replied, “Wednesday.”
This account has been highlighted by OutKick as an example of how DEI policies might affect hiring practices in critical services like firefighting.
Critics argue that such policies are detrimental and contribute to staffing shortages in essential services across California. A tweet from Helen Raleigh echoed this sentiment: "DEI ruins every agency and institution it touches."
The discussion around DEI continues as communities debate its impact on public service efficiency.
