Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old Ivy League graduate, has been formally charged with first-degree murder following the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The charges were filed shortly after Mangione's arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania, where he was initially detained on weapons and forgery charges.
Mangione was arraigned in Pennsylvania and is being held without bail. During his court hearing, he asked to delay the decision regarding whether he would require a public defender. According to The U.S. Sun, additional charges against him include forgery, carrying a gun without a license, false identification to law enforcement authorities, and tampering with records or identification.
Later that day, prosecutors officially charged Mangione with first-degree murder related to Thompson's death as per documents cited by the New York Post. Currently in custody at the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Mangione awaits extradition to New York.
The Manhattan District Attorney’s office confirmed these charges through ABC7 NY but stated that details will remain sealed until Mangione appears in court in New York.
At Blair County Courthouse in Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania, a judge read out the entire criminal complaint against Mangione since it had not been previously presented to him. Prosecutors argued against granting bail by noting police found $8,000 in US cash and $2,000 in foreign currency on him. They also mentioned his possession of a passport and a Faraday bag used for blocking cell signals.
Mangione disputed two assertions made by prosecutors during the proceedings: firstly about the origin of cash found on him claiming ignorance of its source; secondly about possessing a Faraday bag which he explained was used for its waterproof properties rather than any criminal intent.
Hailing from a prominent Maryland family and holding an Ivy League degree, Mangione was apprehended at an Altoona McDonald’s after being recognized by a customer from images released by the NYPD. At his arrest scene were discovered items including a 3D-printed pistol (a ghost gun), silencer multiple fake IDs along with handwritten grievances targeting healthcare industry practices according to sources including ABC7 NY.
