Colleges and universities in the United States are preparing for potential changes as President-elect Donald Trump has expressed intentions to reform higher education. Concerns have arisen among institutions that have embraced diversity, equity, and inclusion policies, fearing significant impacts under Trump's administration.

The state of higher education in the U.S. has been a topic of debate, with criticisms about rising tuition costs despite substantial endowments at some schools. Additionally, there is concern over the perceived decline in free speech on campuses.

According to FOX News, "President-elect Donald Trump’s decisive victory has colleges and universities on high alert after he vowed to take on higher education as part of his plan to overhaul the U.S. education system." The report highlights scrutiny faced by universities due to their responses to antisemitism amid protests related to the conflict in Gaza. This scrutiny led some donors to withdraw financial support from these institutions.

Despite this, many universities continue receiving significant federal funding. An Open the Books study noted that since 2018, elite universities have received $33 billion in federal contracts and grants, averaging $6.6 billion annually. Some institutions reportedly collected more federal dollars than tuition payments within a year.

Trump's campaign rhetoric included promises to address what he described as “Marxist Maniacs” influencing American higher learning. His proposed reforms could lead to substantial changes in how these institutions operate.
