Agnes Scott College Appoints Chicora Martin Vice President for Student Affairs

Agnes Scott College yesterday announced the appointment of Dr. Chicora Martin as the college’s vice president for student affairs and dean of students, effective November 1. Dr. Martin comes to Agnes Scott after seven years at Mills College in Oakland, California, where they served as vice president of student life and dean of students.

“As dean of students, Dr. Martin will be a crucial partner in providing vision, leadership and direction to maintaining the quality and vitality of student life while serving a growing student population,” said Leocadia I. Zak, president of Agnes Scott. “In all aspects of the role, Dr. Martin endeavors to work consistently from a framework of transformative learning and social justice and is committed to holistic student development, service-oriented leadership and transparency. We are thrilled that Dr. Martin will be bringing their expertise in these areas and proven leadership skills to Agnes Scott.”  

A graduate of East Carolina University, they earned a PhD in educational leadership from Colorado State University and a MS in higher education from Florida State University. Dr. Martin is a valued voice among student affairs professionals and has contributed as an author and speaker to many national organizations, as well as consulting with colleges across the country on how to navigate change and community development with individuals from diverse perspectives.

Previously at the University of Oregon, Dr. Martin created the Multicultural Inclusion and Support Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence as well as university-wide processes for bias response. They also led the university’s Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Education & Support Services, a nationally recognized center in policy development. In their position at Mills College, Dr. Martin led initiatives for student engagement and success, strategic and assessment planning and implementation, campus crisis response and emergency preparedness, and managed relations with donors and the community.
