Eagle Woods Academy social worker Tera Reid has been named the DeKalb County School District (DCSD) 2024–2025 Educational Support Professional II of the Year. Reid was recognized for her dedication and service at the DCSD's 11th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards Gala.
Reid, who has served in multiple roles over her 25-year career, expressed her gratitude for the award. "It’s a great honor to be recognized as the District’s Educational Support Professional II of the Year," said Reid. She added that being selected felt like a significant milestone in her professional journey.
Throughout her career, Reid has worked in various sectors, including schools, social services, juvenile justice, HIV/AIDS awareness, mental health, and support for sexually exploited children. She is guided by the philosophy that much is required from those given much, a principle that has been central in her life and career choices.
Reid emphasized the contrast in opportunities she received compared to others, particularly the vulnerable. "Although I did not come from a privileged background, I was blessed with a nurturing environment and numerous opportunities," she stated. This realization has driven her commitment to help others achieve their potential.
Having worked at DCSD and Eagle Woods Academy since 2013, Reid finds joy in forming meaningful relationships with students and families to help them overcome trauma and mental health challenges. "Building strong relationships with my students and their families and assisting them in overcoming these challenges brings me joy," she said.
Despite the challenges of social work, Reid remains optimistic about the positive impact she makes. "Even if I do not consistently witness the outcomes of my efforts, I hold onto the belief that eventually, some words of encouragement I shared or skills I imparted will resonate with my students," she expressed.
Reid hopes her legacy will be recognized through the positive changes she inspires. "Ultimately, I aspire for my legacy to be encapsulated in the phrase, ‘Ms. Reid taught me that.’"
