The United Auto Workers Union President, Shawn Fain, has recently expressed support for the Trump administration's efforts to tackle what he describes as detrimental trade laws impacting the American workforce. This stance marks a significant shift from his previous position during the 2024 election when he endorsed Kamala Harris and criticized Donald Trump.

Fain's recent remarks commend the government’s actions toward instituting tariffs on foreign-made vehicles, a move he believes is pivotal in reversing adverse trade practices. He stated, "We are ecstatic to see an administration finally address the unfair trade laws in this country. These laws have destroyed the American working class."

Furthermore, Fain elaborated on the potential positive outcomes of the 25% tariff, describing it as a historical step in ending what he refers to as the "free trade disaster" that has negatively impacted working-class communities for years. He emphasized the importance of correcting trade deals to prevent a "race to the bottom" in the auto industry.

Fain also called for broader measures to support autoworkers, including enhanced union rights and reliable retirement and healthcare benefits. He asserted that the union is willing to collaborate with any political figure committed to advancing the interests of the working class. "The UAW and the working class, in general, couldn’t care less about party politics; working people expect leaders to work together to deliver results," he said.

Applauding the recent tariffs, Fain highlighted the role of automakers across various companies to reinvest in the United States to revive quality union jobs.
