Cobb School issued the following announcement on Nov. 11.
This week on The Chairman's Brief, Mr. Scamihorn has a fascinating conversation with one of Cobb Schools' own police officers, Dante Garnigan. Mr. Garnigan grew up in Cartersville and served in the military for 13 years before becoming a police officer. He has been a policeman for 18 years.
Mr. Garnigan was also active in coaching, seeing the value of kids having discipline and relationships through sports. This connection can often point to a more positive future. The opportunity to spend time around kids while helping in these athletic programs led to a natural progression in his policing career, moving him from the streets of Marietta to the hallways at Barber Middle School.
Officer G, as the kids call him, constantly strives to be open and available to the students. He wants them to know him as a friend and advocate first, not as a force to be feared. This helps open possibilities for students to talk to him as a trusted adult and foster positive mentoring relationships.
