DeKalb County CEO Michael Thurmond will hold his final food distribution event on Saturday, November 23. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, over 170,000 boxes of food have been distributed across more than 40 events.
“It has been an honor and a privilege to work with the Board of Commissioners, faith leaders and community volunteers to help fight food insecurity in DeKalb County,” said CEO Thurmond. “The most important four-letter word in the English language is ‘care,’ and I believe that over the past four years, we have faithfully cared for our fellow residents who have been fighting to feed their families.”
The upcoming event will see DeKalb County Government partnering with local faith leaders and community groups to distribute 5,000 boxes containing Georgia-grown fruits, vegetables, and chicken hindquarters. The distribution will begin at 9 a.m. at various locations including Antioch AME Church in Stone Mountain and Beulah Missionary Baptist Church in Decatur.
In addition to churches, partnerships include the Chamblee Coalition for Homelessness and La Vision Newspaper. The county is using federal American Rescue Plan funds to procure the produce and chicken for this initiative.
