During a recent House Judiciary Subcommittee hearing, Congressman Hank Johnson of Georgia expressed his opposition to Republican attempts aimed at challenging the independence of the U.S. judiciary. Specifically, these efforts involve suggesting the impeachment of judges whose rulings are unfavorable to Donald Trump.

Congressman Johnson, who is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Courts, Intellectual Property, and the Internet, addressed the issue during his statements at the hearing. He questioned the impact on the justice system and democracy when judges face impeachment threats "not for high crimes and misdemeanors, but for simply ruling in a way that is against [Donald Trump]."

Professor Kate Shaw, who attended the hearing as a witness, shared her concerns on the matter, stating, “The intent there is the same, to basically have a chilling effect on the willingness of judges to rule against the Administration.”

Congressman Johnson emphasized the importance of maintaining an independent judiciary, which is seen as a fundamental element of American democracy that ensures the rule of law is upheld over partisan interests. He reiterated his commitment to defending judicial integrity and upholding the Constitution against such attacks.
