During a meeting on February 26, 2025, the DeKalb County School District’s (DCSD) Student Assignment Project (SAP) Advisory Committee addressed several topics of public interest. These included school buildings and facilities, attendance boundaries, and program equity and effectiveness.

For months, SAP committees have been crucial in reviewing student assignments to DCSD schools. The process involves more than adjusting attendance boundaries and includes teachers, parents, community partners, and local leaders from North, Central, Southwest, and Southeast DeKalb. These groups meet monthly to offer data-driven recommendations to the Board of Education and district leaders.

The meeting brought together all four regional committees as a District Committee of the Whole. Community questions regarding school buildings, attendance boundaries, and program equity were collected to ensure responses aligned with SAP's mission.

Key points discussed included:

- All school facilities meet Georgia Department of Education regulations. Most can be adapted for new requirements; however, older facilities face space constraints.

- DCSD currently has no vacant buildings; all are used for instructional or operational purposes.

- The committee may consider recommending superclusters.

- Schools play a critical role in building strong connections among students, families, and communities by engaging stakeholders.

- The district is conducting audits on its English Language Learner program, curriculum technology programs used by schools, and equity initiatives. There is no set schedule for these evaluations.

- Non-charter schools must be evaluated under state law using the state accountability system. DCSD may also perform additional internal analyses.

DCSD values feedback from committees as they refine proposals based on data analysis. This effort aims to reorganize buildings, boundaries, and programs for the first time in nearly 15 years due to demographic changes and uneven resource distribution.

After an 18-month SAP process concludes with final recommendations anticipated by March 2026, DCSD plans to review school boundaries every five years in alignment with E-SPLOST planning. This approach ensures fiscal responsibility while striving to provide high-quality education preparing students for college or careers.
