During the regular board meeting on January 13, the DeKalb County Board of Education elected new leadership for 2025. Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce from District 3 was unanimously chosen as the new Board Chair, while Ms. Allyson Gevertz from District 4 was elected Vice Chair.
Mrs. Pierce expressed her gratitude for the support she received from her colleagues and constituents. “I am humbled and honored to have earned the unanimous vote of my veteran and newly elected colleagues to serve as chair of our Board,” she stated. She also reflected on her journey alongside Immediate Past Chair Diijon DaCosta, Sr., expressing optimism about working with Vice-Chair Gevertz, Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton, and other district employees.
Ms. Gevertz also shared her appreciation for the trust placed in her by fellow board members: “I am grateful to our Board of Education for trusting us to lead,” she said, highlighting their collective passion for students and readiness for the year ahead.
Gevertz further commented on her long-standing professional relationship with Mrs. Pierce: “I have worked with Mrs. Pierce in various education advocacy roles for nearly 20 years and have always admired her integrity and professionalism.”
Looking forward to a productive year, Mrs. Pierce emphasized teamwork within the board: “Always acting in the spirit of camaraderie, this Board will continue to represent well and do what’s necessary to keep our DeKalb County School District on the cutting edge of high achievement.”
Additionally, four DCBOE members began their four-year terms after taking their oath on January 7: Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Andrew B. Ziffer (District 1), Dr. Tiffany Tate-Hogan (District 5), and Mr. Awet Eyasu (District 7).
