During a regular meeting on January 13, the DeKalb County Board of Education (DCBOE) elected new leadership for 2025. Mrs. Deirdre P. Pierce from District 3 was unanimously chosen as the Board Chair, while Ms. Allyson Gevertz from District 4 was elected Vice Chair.

Mrs. Pierce expressed her gratitude for the unanimous support she received from both veteran and newly elected colleagues. "I am humbled and honored to have earned the unanimous vote of my veteran and newly elected colleagues to serve as chair of our Board," she stated. She also acknowledged her constituents in District 3 for their continued support, describing her role as one of the greatest servant leadership positions she has held.

Reflecting on her journey to this position, Mrs. Pierce mentioned her past experiences with Immediate Past Chair Diijon DaCosta, Sr., highlighting their shared achievements over two years in leadership roles. She looks forward to working with Vice-Chair Allyson Gevertz, other board members, Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton, and district employees.

Ms. Gevertz also conveyed pride in receiving confidence from her colleagues: "I am grateful to our Board of Education for trusting us to lead." She emphasized the strength of both new and returning board members and expressed readiness for the challenges ahead in 2025.

On a personal note, Ms. Gevertz shared her excitement about collaborating closely with Mrs. Pierce: "I have worked with Mrs. Pierce in various education advocacy roles for nearly 20 years and have always admired her integrity and professionalism."

Mrs. Pierce set expectations for a productive year ahead: "Always acting in the spirit of camaraderie, this Board will continue to represent well and do what’s necessary to keep our DeKalb County School District on the cutting edge of high achievement."

Additionally, four DCBOE members began their four-year terms after taking their oath on January 6: Mrs. Pierce, Mr. Andrew B. Ziffer (District 1), Dr. Tiffany Tate-Hogan (District 5), and Mr. Awet Eyasu (District 7).
