Jennifer Sey, founder of women's sportswear company XX-XY Athletics, recently addressed accusations of transphobia following an article by the San Francisco Chronicle. The publication criticized Sey's company for allegedly producing "anti-trans activewear" and supporting right-wing influencers. In response, Sey stated that such criticisms only serve to increase her company's popularity.
"Here’s what out-of-touch-with-reality 'progressives' don’t get. Writing stuff like this sells more t-shirts," Sey posted on social media platform X on January 4th. She continued, "Cancelling doesn’t work anymore. Calling me a bigot and trans-phobe holds no power in the culture anymore."
Sey explained her motivation behind starting XX-XY Athletics was to address what she perceives as the encroachment of male athletes into women's sports. "I was inspired to start XX-XY Athletics because I looked around at all of the athletic brands out there claiming to champion female athletes and ignoring this issue that is right in front of us," she told Fox News.
The San Francisco Chronicle article, written by columnist Soleil Ho, referred to Sey's business as possibly being "the next MAGA hat." It questioned the legitimacy of her stance regarding transgender athletes competing in women's sports events.
In response to the piece, Sey criticized its factual accuracy: "The article overall is ... I don’t have another word for it other than ‘stupid’ and ‘filled with lies,’” she said in her interview with Fox News. She challenged Ho's assertion about sex being a spectrum without supporting studies or evidence.
Despite facing criticism from various quarters, Sey remains steadfast in her beliefs and business direction. Her rebuttal underscores a broader cultural debate over gender identity and athletics.
