A U.S. Marshals Tactical K-9 named Rocky has been released from the hospital after being critically injured during a manhunt. The 18-month-old Belgian Malinois played a crucial role in locating an armed suspect accused of killing Brazoria County Sheriff's Deputy Jesus Vargas. The suspect, who had hidden inside a dumpster, opened fire on the officers and hit Rocky twice—once in the neck and once in the nose.
In response, officers returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect at the scene. Following this confrontation, Rocky was quickly transported by a Texas DPS helicopter to Westbury Animal Hospital for emergency surgery.
Rocky's handler stayed with him throughout his treatment, and several officers visited to show their support for his bravery during the operation. Despite his injuries, Rocky is recovering well; he is eating, drinking, walking again, and has been reunited with his handler.
Officials expect Rocky to make a full recovery and return to active duty soon. He has served for only six months but is already hailed as a hero by law enforcement for his courage during this dangerous mission.
"We are all extremely grateful to the staff at Westbury for the fact that Rocky is still with us," said T. Michael O'Connor, U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Texas. "While Wednesday was a tragedy for all of us in law enforcement with the loss of Deputy Vargas, it likely could have gone worse had Rocky not been there."
"He is a hero. We all wish him a speedy recovery."
Rocky was released from Westbury Animal Hospital yesterday and will continue his recovery at home.
