TikTok is now officially banned in the United States following a decision by the U.S. Supreme Court, which ordered China-owned ByteDance to divest from TikTok or face removal from U.S. app stores. The ruling has led to TikTok's services becoming temporarily unavailable in the country.
President Trump previously requested the Supreme Court to delay the ban, seeking "the opportunity to pursue a political resolution of the questions at issue in the case." In an interview with NBC, Trump mentioned that he would "likely" extend TikTok's operation for 90 days upon taking office. He stated, "I think that would be, certainly, an option that we look at. The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate."
A statement from TikTok advised users about the impact of this legal development: "We regret that a U.S. law banning TikTok will take effect on January 19 and force us to make our services temporarily unavailable." They added their intent to restore service as soon as possible.
At approximately 10:30 pm EST, TikTok announced its services had been terminated, leaving users uncertain about when they could no longer access the app. An additional notice informed users: "A law banning Tiktok has been enacted in the U.S. Unfortunately, that means you can't use TikTok for now."
The situation remains fluid as President Trump expressed willingness to work on a solution once he assumes office.
