Biden and senior officials convened on Monday night to discuss the federal response to the wildfires in Los Angeles County. The administration has announced a $770 "one-time payment" for individuals affected by the devastating fires.
The wildfires have caused significant destruction, with at least 24 fatalities and thousands of structures destroyed. Over 150,000 residents have been evacuated as entire neighborhoods have been reduced to ashes.
President Joe Biden declared a federal commitment to support recovery efforts in California. During a briefing with Vice President Kamala Harris and emergency officials, Biden stated that the federal government would cover all disaster response costs for six months.
"And I want to be clear, we’re not waiting until those fires are over to start helping the victims," Biden said. "We’re getting them help right now, as you all know."
He further explained, "People impacted by these fires are going to receive a one-time payment of $770, one-time payment, so they can quickly purchase things like water, baby formula, and prescriptions. So far, nearly 6,000 survivors have registered to do just that, and $5.1 million has gone out."
This announcement follows previous instances where the administration provided similar payments during disasters. After the August 2023 Maui wildfires, FEMA offered a one-time payment of $700 per household for immediate needs such as clothing and food. In response to Hurricane Helene's aftermath, which resulted in over 200 deaths, FEMA provided an initial payment of $750 for essential items like food and water.
