Democrats are facing criticism on social media after several lawmakers chose not to stand or applaud for a child battling brain cancer during President Donald Trump's joint address to Congress. The incident occurred as Trump highlighted the story of a 13-year-old brain cancer survivor, who was made an honorary member of the Secret Service. While applause erupted from the Republican side, many Democratic lawmakers remained seated and silent.
The child, who aspires to be a police officer, was diagnosed with brain cancer six years ago and given just five months to live at that time. Despite this prognosis, he continues to fight the disease.
Trump asked Secret Service Director Sean Curran to make DJ, 13, a Secret Service agent. "He was diagnosed with brain cancer six years ago," Trump stated. "Doctors gave him five months to live at most."
The event quickly gained attention on social media platforms, sparking outrage among viewers who criticized the Democrats' behavior as insensitive.
"Democrats are sitting and refusing to clap for a child with brain cancer," tweeted Katie Pavlich.
"WHY DIDN’T THE DEMOCRATS STAND FOR DANIEL?" questioned Gunther Eagleman. "He’s a 13-year-old boy with brain cancer who just wanted to become a police officer."
Critics described the politicians as overly partisan for not celebrating the child's recognition. Videos and images circulated online showing Democrats remaining seated during the applause.
Additionally, it was noted that some Democrats engaged in protests during the speech by shouting and holding signs. Notably, Sen. Chris Murphy and Reps. Maxine Waters and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez did not attend the event.
