Senate Democrats are attempting to rebrand their image, shifting from a position of opposition to former President Donald Trump to advocating for the average American. This change is highlighted in a new video where they express their intent to support policies that allow people to retain more of their income and reduce living costs.
The video, released ahead of Trump's inauguration, was met with criticism on social media for being perceived as out of touch and "cringe." It features Senate Democrats speaking directly to the camera, pledging cooperation with anyone aiming to improve lives but vowing resistance against Trump and Republicans if their actions prove harmful.
Senator Cory Booker shared the video on his X account with the caption: “Senate Democrats are here to fight for you.” However, several Democratic senators from battleground states or those facing re-election were absent from the video. Notable absentees include Senators John Fetterman (Pa.), Jeanne Shaheen (N.H.), Maggie Hassan (N.H.), Ruben Gallego (Ariz.), Mark Kelly (Ariz.), Jon Ossoff (Ga.), Gary Peters (Mich.), and Chris Murphy (Conn.).
Critics took to social media platforms like Twitter to mock the initiative. Reverend Ben Johnson sarcastically commented on the strategy behind the video by suggesting it resembled failed liberal attempts at boosting popularity. David P Deavel criticized Senator Booker's appearance in the video, likening it humorously to a school project gone awry.
Joel Berry also ridiculed the effort by calling attention to what he described as "lizard-faced geriatric stock traders," while Jimmy Dore questioned whether this new approach marked an end to previous Democratic stances against union strikes and immigration policies affecting wages.
The attempt by Senate Democrats has drawn comparisons with similar efforts by Hollywood celebrities, further amplifying its reception as misguided.
