US Attorney General Merrick Garland delivered a farewell speech emphasizing his commitment to justice, not politics. Speaking at the Great Hall in the Department of Justice, Garland stated, “It is the obligation of each of us to follow our norms, not only when it is easy, but also when it is hard, especially when it is hard.” He reiterated his dedication to adhering to norms even under challenging circumstances.
Politico reported that Garland became emotional during the 15-minute address. In his speech, he highlighted the department's actions against those involved in the January 6th protests. "You charged more than 1,500 people for criminal conduct that occurred during the January 6 attack on the Capitol," he said. He emphasized that these actions were guided by facts and law rather than political motives.
Garland addressed misconceptions about the department's activities: "The story that has been told by some outside of this building about what has happened inside of it is wrong. You have worked to pursue justice, not politics." He encouraged staffers to remember their reasons for joining the department.
In anticipation of a change in administration with Pam Bondi and Donald Trump’s return, Garland urged career staffers to remain at their posts. The Washington Post noted his emphasis on institutional knowledge as new leaders take over. “You will continue in the department’s mission...to uphold the rule of law,” he remarked last month.
Reports indicate some DOJ lawyers are preparing for potential legal challenges with Trump's anticipated return by hiring defense attorneys.
