The DeKalb County School District has announced that two of its schools have received top honors in Georgia according to the latest U.S. News & World Report annual rankings. Kittredge Magnet School and Wadsworth Magnet School for High Achievers have been named the number one and two elementary schools in the state, respectively.
“This extraordinary recognition reflects the hard work and dedication of so many of our remarkable students, outstanding teachers, administrators, Board members, and the incredible support staff and community and business partners,” said Superintendent Dr. Devon Q. Horton. “It is the collective efforts and results of so many that we are able to provide world-class opportunities to every student and proud graduate of DeKalb County Schools.”
The district's commitment to academic excellence extends beyond these two schools, demonstrating a consistent focus on achievement across all levels.
According to U.S. News & World Report, successful schools educate students from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds to prepare them for future success. The report emphasizes developing core competencies in state curricula that best equip students for high school.
“The 2024 Best Elementary and Middle Schools rankings offer a way for parents to get a snapshot of their child’s school and how well it’s doing within its community,” stated LaMont Jones, managing editor for education at U.S. News. He added that accessible data on student-teacher ratios, district spending, and available school counselors can help keep parents informed.
The U.S. News & World Report K-8 rankings rely on publicly available data from the U.S. Department of Education, focusing on state assessments in mathematics and reading/language arts while considering student backgrounds and overall educational effectiveness. Student-teacher ratios are used as tie-breakers in scores.
Although there are no national rankings for elementary or middle schools by U.S. News & World Report, its K-12 directory includes over 119,000 schools nationwide with 65,759 (83%) ranked among 79,374 public schools with elementary or middle grades.
