Emory issued the following announcement on Jan. 26.
Emory Johns Creek Hospital and McClure Health Science High School (MHSHS) are proud to announce a successful start to their joint pipeline program. In the MHSHS Patient Care Technician (PCT) program, students will participate in clinical shadowing opportunities with Emory Healthcare nurses and other health care professionals with the goal of learning about career options in health care.
Students who complete the PCT program will receive official certification through MHSHS, creating a pipeline of qualified, industry-trained candidates to fill technician positions at the hospital. An added bonus is that these new technicians will have been trained by Emory Healthcare professionals.
Jasmine Alfaro is an MHSHS senior whose future has received a kick start from the pipeline program. “I feel really lucky to be able to learn here,” she says. “This is definitely providing me with an advantage and a good foundation for my future in health care. The people are so nice and help me feel comfortable growing as a patient care tech.”
“We couldn’t be more excited and honored to be a part of Emory Healthcare’s pipeline program,” says Meridith Watts, BSN, RN, MHSHS Health Science Coordinator. “The opportunity for our students to be able to witness the quality of service a Magnet facility like Emory Johns Creek Hospital provides will have a huge impact on them. They are not only learning about health care but also about customer service, professionalism, and even community outreach.”
Emory Johns Creek Hospital leadership is in agreement about the impact and benefits of the program. “Students who come here to learn about careers in health care also find out how rewarding these types of jobs can be and what it’s like to truly be a part of a high performing team,” says Barbara Rolin, MSN, RN-BC, director of nursing operations and patient care services at Emory Johns Creek Hospital. “These students will be health care leaders and we are thrilled to help get them started.”
The pipeline program will run through March 2022. Students will be on-site at the hospital four hours per week for a total of 24 hours spent in clinical shadowing.
