The DeKalb County Police Department's Special Operations Division recently implemented a Spring Operation Safety Checkpoint to bolster public safety through heightened law enforcement. This initiative is a part of CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson’s strategic plan to combat crime and reckless driving.

Held on Friday, April 11, 2025, the operation took place at 2936 Memorial Drive near Candler Road and aimed to ensure drivers were abiding by traffic laws. Officers checked for valid licenses, registration, insurance, impaired driving, and equipment violations. Educational materials on traffic safety were also distributed. In this effort, the division was supported by the DUI STAR Team, Motors Unit, SWAT, and STEP Units.

Highlighting the importance of these efforts, CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson stated, “As CEO, public safety is my top priority. Whether it’s reducing violent crime or preventing street racing, my administration is committed to supporting proactive policing efforts that keep DeKalb residents safe. The progress we are seeing—particularly the nearly 49% reduction in homicides compared to this time last year—is a testament to the dedication and strategic coordination of our law enforcement agencies.”

Results of the checkpoint included six arrests, 60 traffic citations, the recovery of 1.5 pounds of marijuana, and the seizure of multiple vehicles. This followed a recent joint operation with the Georgia State Patrol that targeted an organized street racing ring, resulting in multiple arrests and the recovery of firearms.

CEO Cochran-Johnson emphasized firm measures against crime, stating, “I will do everything within my authority to get tough on crime and lock up perpetrators across DeKalb. We have too many people living in fear of street racers, car invasions, and lawless individuals. I plan to double down on undercover operations and create a direct pipeline between perpetrators and the DeKalb County Jail.”

The DeKalb County Police reported 26 motor vehicle fatalities this year, with impaired driving and speeding as leading causes. These operations are intended to curb hazardous driving and encourage public awareness about road safety.

Interim Chief Gregory Padrick stated, “This type of operation helps us reduce crashes, identify impaired drivers, and ensure that motorists are operating their vehicles safely and legally. Our goal is not just enforcement—but prevention. We want to stop tragedies before they happen and build stronger relationships with the communities we serve.”

The safety checkpoint engaged 27 officers across various operational roles. Further policing efforts, including multi-agency and community-focused campaigns, are planned for the spring and summer.
