On Thursday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed questions regarding the revocation of a Turkish student's visa. The student, enrolled at Tufts University, was detained in Boston, leading to questions about the State Department's decision.
Secretary Rubio explained that obtaining a visa to study in the United States is a privilege. He emphasized that students who engage in activities such as vandalism and harassing others risk having their visas revoked. "If you lie to us and get a visa and then enter the United States and with that visa participate in that sort of activity, we’re gonna take away your visa."
Rubio used an analogy to clarify his position, comparing the U.S. to a host who expects respectful behavior from guests. If individuals violate this trust by partaking in disruptive actions, they may be asked to leave. "We gave you a visa to come and study and get a degree, not to become a social activist that tears up our university campuses."
The incident has sparked a broader discussion on academic freedom and the responsibilities of international students in the U.S.
