Liberal television host Bill Maher announced plans to visit the White House for a dinner with former President Donald Trump. The event was reportedly organized by Kid Rock, a known Trump supporter and friend of Maher.
In a discussion with Chris Cuomo, Maher expressed that he doesn't expect to unify the country but believes the meeting could hold symbolic significance. He highlighted the importance of engaging with those holding differing views.
The meeting has drawn attention as Maher, historically a Trump critic, accepted an invitation for a private dinner. "It’s kind of a Nixon-to-China thing," Maher remarked. He explained his position, "There was nobody who was harder on Trump or more prescient about the fact that he wasn’t going to leave office voluntarily. I have the credentials. But they also respect me because I’m honest about the woke train to crazytown, and I don't shrink from that."
Maher dismissed having illusions about healing the nation but considered it "a beginning to heal America."
Additionally, Maher speculated that his deceased parents, lifelong Democrats, might have supported Trump given current political dynamics, suggesting, "My parents, who loved your father, loved Kennedy... [might have been] Trump supporters if alive today because of how woke the left has gotten."
The meeting is being closely watched, and updates will follow once it takes place.
