Conservative Republican Representative Harriet Hageman of Wyoming recently discussed waste, fraud, and abuse within the Department of Education on Winston Marshall's podcast. She highlighted that while the department receives billions in tax dollars, a significant portion does not go towards student education.
Hageman claims that much of the funding is directed to consultants who then funnel money back to politicians. She describes this process as "money laundering and money churning at its absolute best."
During the podcast, Marshall asked if the DOGE program targets bureaucrats and what could be expected from it. Hageman responded by noting that the Federal Department of Education has an annual budget of approximately $280 billion, with less than 25% allocated to student education. She questioned where the remaining $220 billion goes, suggesting it supports a cycle involving bureaucracy, consultants, and political donations.
"The brilliance of DOGE isn’t that he’s going in and cutting spending—he doesn’t have the authority to do that," Hageman stated. "We’re the ones that have the authority to do that. What I want him to do is come up with a report, go through agency by agency by agency, identify every single program that we should not be funding, put a number attached to it."
