Randi Weingarten, head of a major teachers' union, recently expressed concerns about the potential closure of the Department of Education under President Donald Trump's administration. During a podcast interview with Molly Jong-Fast, Weingarten discussed her apprehensions regarding the impact on school choice funding.
Weingarten stated that eliminating the Department of Education's approximately $100 billion budget could lead to increased funding for school choice vouchers. She criticized these vouchers as being akin to a "tax credit" for wealthy families who already send their children to private schools.
"We know, for example, what Texas would do," Weingarten explained. "They’ll use it for vouchers. So they won’t give [federal funding] to the kids who have it now, they’ll just give it for vouchers."
She further argued that current voucher programs are ineffective for students and primarily serve as an income redistribution mechanism benefiting those already in private education. "And frankly, what we are seeing in all the programs now – in terms of vouchers – they don’t work for kids," she said.
Weingarten's comments highlight ongoing debates about educational reform and funding allocation at both federal and state levels.
