The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has revoked the network access of a whistleblower who had recently spoken out about issues within the agency. David Nelson, an IRS Tax Examining Technician, shared his concerns with James O’Keefe from O’Keefe Media Group, highlighting what he described as outdated systems and insufficient funding at the IRS.
Nelson expressed frustration over the lack of modernization in the agency's operations. "We can’t do anywhere close to what the American people think we can," he said. He pointed out that their systems are not integrated and described them as "very antiquated."
According to Nelson, there has been a long-standing issue with funding which he claims is directed towards minor fixes rather than addressing larger systemic problems. He noted that they use an old software system called Integrated Data Retrieval System (IDRS), which contributes to inefficiencies such as a bloated workforce and delays in processing.
Nelson suggested that substantial changes could potentially reduce the size of the IRS workforce significantly by implementing new programs and systems. His comments come in light of recent reductions at the IRS, where 6,000 employees were fired last month under efforts by President Trump to decrease federal employment. The agency plans further cuts up to 50% of its workforce.
Despite potential risks to his career, Nelson stated his willingness to face consequences if it meant benefiting both taxpayers and fellow IRS employees: “I’m not afraid of losing a career,” he said.
Following these revelations, Nelson’s access to IRS networks was revoked on Thursday afternoon. When James O’Keefe reached out for comment from the IRS Chief of Media regarding this action, she declined to respond and ended the call abruptly.
