CBS News reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez recently visited the US-Mexico border and observed a significant change in activity. During his four-hour visit, he did not encounter any migrants or asylum seekers attempting to cross into the United States. "Typically, when you go to the border, you will see groups of people who are trying to cross into the US, but we did not see a single migrant," Montoya-Galvez reported.
The reporter noted that just feet away from Mexico, their cameras captured a heavily fortified US border. A border patrol agent explained to CBS that "activity is very slow" and attributed this to multiple factors, including consequences for illegal crossings.
Recent reports indicate that under President Trump, border encounters have significantly decreased. In February 2025, encounters reached an all-time low with just over 8,000 incidents. This marks a 94% decrease compared to February of the previous year under President Biden and Vice President Harris.
During Trump's first term, the US recorded its lowest number of illegal entries in 47 years with only 310,000 crossings in 2017. This contrasts sharply with December 2023 figures when over 300,000 individuals crossed the border.
The administration claims these developments as evidence of fulfilling promises to secure the southern border effectively.
