Former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has expressed concern over the current state of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, describing it as being in "utter disarray." According to McCabe, this turmoil stems from actions taken by President Trump, who recently dismissed David Sundberg, a top official at the FBI Washington Field Office, along with nearly 90 other FBI officials.

The dismissals reportedly include 88 agents and managers across various field offices, including those in Washington, Palm Beach, and Miami. This move is part of what is being described as an ongoing effort by the Trump administration to remove officials involved in January 6 cases.

McCabe stated that many within the agency are anxious about their future employment and financial security. He remarked on the unprecedented nature of these events: “This is totally unprecedented.” He added that he had spoken to more colleagues in recent days than he had in years due to growing concerns among staff.

The former deputy director outlined the potential personal consequences for those affected by these firings: “If you get fired, you’re done. That’s the end of your reputation...you lose your pay...your chance at a pension...your health insurance.”

These comments follow McCabe's own history with the bureau. In May 2017, shortly after President Trump dismissed James Comey as FBI Director, McCabe initiated a counterintelligence investigation into whether Trump was acting as an agent of Russia. He also began a criminal investigation into potential obstruction of justice related to Comey's firing. McCabe himself was dismissed from his position in 2018 for alleged lack of candor during media disclosures.

Despite this dismissal, McCabe later won back his pension through legal action against the Department of Justice (DOJ), which ultimately rescinded his firing and recognized him as having retired honorably.
