Dr. Latalia Robbins, a dedicated Pre-K teacher at Smoke Rise Elementary School, has been recognized as the DeKalb County School District's (DCSD) 2024-2025 Teacher of the Year. She was honored with this title and a $1,000 award from Georgia United Credit Union during the 11th Annual Academy of Educational Excellence Awards Gala last November.
Reflecting on her achievement, Dr. Robbins expressed surprise and hope for more recognition of Pre-K educators. "I didn’t know this could happen to me because Pre-K is often treated as a separate part of the school," she said. "With this acknowledgment, I hope more teachers on this grade level are recognized for their invaluable contribution to the whole fabric of learning."
Dr. Robbins has been teaching Pre-K for 15 years and holds multiple degrees in early childhood education along with several specialized certifications. She emphasized how teaching has shaped her both personally and professionally: “It has made me a better person altogether.”
Her students celebrated her success by decorating their classroom, while colleagues praised her dedication. Katrina Woodruff, Dr. Robbins’s paraprofessional partner for two years, described her as deserving of the award due to her efforts within the school community.
Principal Dr. Kystye Tatum highlighted Dr. Robbins's impact on student learning through innovative teaching methods focusing on social-emotional development and literacy skills.
Smoke Rise Elementary will host a banquet on January 29th to honor Dr. Robbins's contributions to education.
Dr. Robbins attributes much of her success to teamwork among faculty members at Smoke Rise Elementary: “We work together for the collective achievement of the entire school community.”
She hopes that her recognition will draw attention to the importance of Pre-K education and its lasting impact on students' academic journeys.
