Sunny Hostin, a co-host of ABC's "The View," recently read a legal note on air following her comments about Congressman Matt Gaetz. During the show, Hostin discussed allegations linking Gaetz to sex trafficking, which she attributed to investigations by the Department of Justice under President Joe Biden.
Hostin stated on air, “How could you nominate someone with allegations of child trafficking across state lines and having sex with a 17-year-old.” She further mentioned that according to her understanding, once Gaetz discovered the individual was 17, he ceased contact.
Following these remarks, Hostin was required to read a clarification: “Matt Gaetz has long denied all allegations, calling the claims invented and saying in a statement to NBC News that this false smear following a three year criminal investigation should be viewed with great skepticism,” adding that “the DOJ investigation was closed with no charges being brought.”
Gaetz has been nominated by former President Donald Trump as his choice for Attorney General. Trump is actively seeking support from Republican Senators for Gaetz's confirmation. According to Axios, Trump has made personal calls advocating for Gaetz’s nomination. North Dakota Senator Kevin Cramer shared insights into Trump's motivations: “He clearly wants Matt Gaetz... He believes Matt Gaetz is the one person who will have the fearlessness and ferociousness, really, to do what needs doing at the Department of Justice.”
Senator Cramer also noted Trump's commitment to his nominee: “One thing about Donald Trump, people should never confuse his support for one of his nominees as a tactical or strategic tool for somebody else. And at least to this point, he’s putting his own political capital behind it.”
Gaetz himself expressed enthusiasm about the potential role on social media.
