A recent federally-mandated inventory has confirmed that DeKalb County's publicly-owned drinking water pipes do not contain lead. This assessment was carried out by the DeKalb County Department of Watershed Management (DWM) in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR) and guidelines from the State of Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD). The inventory was completed by the October 2024 deadline, and details can be accessed on the county's website.

Despite these findings, DWM has communicated with property owners to inform them that "the material type for the drinking water pipes of their private lines is unknown." This uncertainty raises concerns about potential lead presence, as "lead in drinking water irreparably harms the health of children and adults and disproportionately impacts lower-income communities and communities of color."

To address this issue comprehensively, residents are encouraged to participate in a voluntary survey to report the material type of their private drinking water pipes. The survey aims to provide a complete inventory that includes private lines. Residents can complete it online.

For further information regarding EPA's Lead and Copper Rule Revisions and Georgia EPD guidelines, individuals are directed to visit DeKalb County's official website.
