DeKalb County has announced significant initiatives aimed at enhancing public safety and supporting law enforcement. In a recent address, CEO Cochran-Johnson celebrated the graduation of the 138th class of the DeKalb County Police Department (DKPD), marking this as a milestone following a $10 million investment to bolster officer pay and benefits.

“These men and women are not just graduates, they are the foundation of a safer, stronger DeKalb County,” said CEO Cochran-Johnson. “My administration is committed to ensuring our officers are equipped with the compensation, tools, and technology necessary to succeed.”

Following the pay increase, DeKalb hosted a highly successful recruitment event which saw over eighty applicants, resulting in several qualified candidates progressing in the hiring process. Currently, DeKalb County officers rank among the best-compensated in the metro Atlanta area, with significant salary increases across various ranks and additional incentives such as a housing allowance and comprehensive medical coverage.

In addition to salary adjustments, a new Real-Time Crime Technology Center is set to be established. This facility aims to centralize surveillance and data analysis, enhancing the county's crime response capabilities. CEO Cochran-Johnson emphasized that “the Real-Time Crime Center will be a game-changer for DeKalb County.”

William Jones, Chief Information Officer, stated, “This center will enhance how we capture, analyze, and act on real-time data.” The facility's design draws from insights gained through visits to similar centers in Atlanta, Cobb County, and Dunwoody.

Strengthening strategic alliances, Cochran-Johnson has reaffirmed partnerships with agencies such as the Georgia State Patrol and is part of the National Public Safety Partnership. These collaborations are part of a broader initiative with federal entities including the ATF, FBI, and DEA to enhance law enforcement efforts.

“These partnerships ensure our officers are not alone,” Cochran-Johnson noted. “They are part of a coordinated network committed to protecting every neighborhood in DeKalb.”

Interim Chief of Police Gregory Padrick shared that updates have been made to guide discretionary use of vehicle pursuits and other techniques. “Policing is evolving, and we must evolve with it,” he said. The measures are said to empower officers in their roles, reflecting a broader commitment to effective policing strategies.

“Our officers are being empowered to do their jobs more effectively. It is time we get tough on crime and create safe streets and communities,” added the CEO.

DeKalb County's initiatives highlight a commitment to public safety through improved compensation, advanced technology, and strategic partnerships.
