One of the lesser-discussed aspects of the 2024 election was the significant shift in leadership across several American cities. Liberal commentator Ezra Klein addressed this topic during a recent podcast appearance. Known for his consistent support of leftist policies during the Obama era, Klein has now expressed criticism of Democratic governance in urban areas.
According to a report by The New York Post, Klein criticized Democrats for their denial regarding issues such as rising crime rates, uncontrolled migration, and increasing prices in U.S. cities. He suggested that Democrats need to "shut the f–k up" about these issues.
The Washington Post noted that President-elect Donald Trump achieved a notable 6.5% increase in votes from major urban counties, surpassing his 3.3% gain in suburban areas. This included a surprising shift in a Manhattan voting district turning Republican for the first time in at least ten years.
Klein commented on this trend during an episode of "Pod Save America," stating, "The thing that surprised me least about the election was the sharp red shift in these big cities." He highlighted the frustration among city residents over various issues such as crime, homelessness, and public disorder.
Klein remarked on the widespread anger he observed among New Yorkers regarding these problems: "The rage I just hear from people in New York … the sense of disorder rising, not just crime, but homeless encampments, trash on the streets, people jumping turnstiles in subways, crazy people on the streets."
A video clip circulating online features Klein's admission about Democratic governance failures and its impact on political shifts towards conservative leadership.
