President Trump's recent inauguration reportedly set a new viewership record, with an estimated 80.7 million viewers tuning in to watch the event. This figure was announced by President Trump himself. The previous record for inaugural viewership was held by Ronald Reagan, who attracted approximately 41.8 million television viewers for his first inauguration.
The ceremony, initially planned for the West Front of the U.S. Capitol, was moved indoors to the Capitol Rotunda due to cold weather conditions. Despite this change, thousands gathered at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC, and participated in watch parties nationwide to witness the historic event.
Almost every seat in the 20,000-seat arena was occupied as supporters watched President Trump take his oath and deliver his inaugural address. According to The Gateway Pundit, Trump used his speech to outline plans for what he termed a "Golden Age of America," aiming to address issues from the past four years.
Data from Streams Charts indicated that both YouTube and Twitch achieved new peak viewership records during the inauguration. Specifically, YouTube's News & Politics section hit an all-time high with nearly 9.7 million viewers and over 2,700 channels streaming at its peak.
Media ratings firm Nielsen reported that cable television viewership peaked at 34.4 million viewers during the event. Some media outlets have cited lower figures from Nielsen's analysis of cable TV networks, suggesting that Joe Biden's 2021 inauguration had higher viewership numbers than Trump's recent ceremony.
President Trump also noted significant online engagement, recording nearly 37 million views on a live stream posted to his X account. He remarked that "an estimated 80.7 million viewers watched" across various platforms including Rumble and Getter.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump highlighted data showing that coverage of his inauguration set a new "All Time Viewership Record" on YouTube's News section with 9.6 million viewers.
