A tragic mid-air collision over the Potomac River near Washington, D.C., has resulted in the recovery of at least 18 bodies, according to a police official speaking to CBS News. The incident involved an American Eagle Flight 5342 and a U.S. Army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, leading both aircraft to crash into the river's icy waters.
Initial reports from NBC News suggested that four individuals had been rescued from the water and were receiving medical attention. However, this was later contradicted by a police official who confirmed no survivors had been found as of late evening.
The American Eagle flight, operated by PSA Airlines, was en route from Wichita, Kansas, carrying 60 passengers and four crew members. The military helicopter carried three personnel. A U.S. Army representative confirmed that the helicopter originated from Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
Emergency teams from across the D.C. area responded swiftly to the scene despite challenges posed by cold temperatures and ice on the river. Fireboats were deployed for search operations as water temperatures hovered around 35°F (2°C).
Maryland Governor Wes Moore announced an elevation of the state’s Emergency Operations Center status to 'Enhanced' to aid rescue efforts. Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin assured that "extensive resources are fully committed" to supporting ongoing operations.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem stated that all available US Coast Guard resources are being utilized for search and rescue missions. President Donald Trump also confirmed he is monitoring developments closely.
The situation remains fluid with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
