President Trump took to Truth Social early Wednesday morning to comment on a fatal collision involving an Army helicopter and a PSA/American Airlines passenger plane near Reagan National Airport. The accident occurred as the plane, originating from Wichita, Kansas, was approaching the airport when it was reportedly struck by the helicopter from the right side at approximately 300 feet. The helicopter was conducting a training flight out of Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
The passenger plane had 60 passengers and four crew members onboard, while three soldiers were aboard the Army helicopter. Rescue operations are currently underway at the crash site near the Maryland side of the Potomac River, south of Washington, D.C.
In his post, Trump expressed concern over the incident: “The airplane was on a perfect and routine line of approach to the airport. The helicopter was going straight at the airplane for an extended period of time. It is a CLEAR NIGHT, the lights on the plane were blazing, why didn’t the helicopter go up or down, or turn. Why didn’t the control tower tell the helicopter what to do instead of asking if they saw the plane. This is a bad situation that looks like it should have been prevented. NOT GOOD!!!” He added: “What a terrible night this has been. God bless you all!”
The White House released an official statement from Trump: “I have been fully briefed on the terrible accident which just took place at Reagan National Airport. May God bless their souls. Thank you for the incredible work being done by our first responders. I am monitoring the situation and will provide more details as they arise.”
Vice President J.D. Vance also responded shortly after with a message on social media: “Please say a prayer for everyone involved in the mid-air collision near Reagan airport this evening. We’re monitoring the situation, but for now let’s hope for the best.”
Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that an investigation has been launched by both Army and Department of Defense into what he described as an "absolutely tragic" event.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated he is closely monitoring developments from FAA headquarters and directed agencies under his purview to support ongoing efforts by NTSB and local authorities.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed deployment of US Coast Guard resources to assist with search and rescue operations related to this incident.
