Agnes Scott College issued the following announcement on Feb. 10.
Dr. Markesha Henderson took over as Director of Athletics just weeks before the pandemic hit and has been guiding the department through it ever since.
She is the first Black woman to serve in the top role at Agnes Scott and one of a handful rising to the head chair of college athletics departments in Georgia over the last five years.
“I remember my first foray into intercollegiate athletics, going into national conventions and literally being able to count ‘1, 2, 3’ in my head in terms of who looked like me. Mary McElroy at Georgia State comes to mind. I think being a part of the NCAA Leadership Institute, where there has been a conscious effort to get minority women in particular in intercollegiate athletics administration roles is now starting to pay dividends. I was in the first female class in 2005-06, so now what you’re starting to see are the results of that intentional investment in developing women.”
In regards to leaving a legacy at Agnes Scott:
“I want people to consider my team at Agnes Scott College as a time where athletics really mattered. I want them to associate the work I am doing with our students and staff when we brought Agnes Scott Athletics to a position of greatness together. We already know our students are brilliant and are going to doing wonderful things in the world as respected professionals, but I want them to remember that feeling of being a champion too.”
