No new teachers in Decatur sign pledge on Jan. 12 to teach Critical Race Theory

Hs 07

There were no new teachers in Decatur who signed the pledge on Jan. 12, according to an online pledge from the Zinn Education Project.

The pledge was signed by 15 teachers on Jan. 11, the day before. It now has 16 pledges from Decatur teachers.

They’re one of the thousands of US teachers pledging to continue educating students about the controversial Critical Race Theory, which explains racism is embedded in US culture and politics.

Comments from Decatur teachers included, "I am deeply concerned about a resolution our state DOE is considering that will dictate what I can teach in the classroom, at a time when I feel we have only just begun to teach the whole story" and "theory is what education is about. We learn history, we learn to thnk, we learn to respond. Education is power. Suppressing information is vioent oppression".

Though the concept was first suggested in the late 70’s, it has recently exploded as a contentious issue between the American right and left in the last two years.

Many who signed the pledge are defying state bans on the teachings. Arizona, Idaho, Iowa, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas have passed legislation banning discussions about the US being inherently racist.

Other states, such as Montana and South Dakota, have denounced the teachings without passing specific legislation.

In an interview with The Washington Free Beacon', Ashley Varner of the Freedom Foundation accused the Zinn Education Project of providing “left-leaning propaganda to teachers.”

Patrick EnderleIdeas from all parts of the spectrum matter (but do not necessarily hold the same validity), and so isolating any one particular one or set of ideas diminishes the goal of education to create citizens capable of critical thought.
