Georgia Department of Community Affairs issued the following announcement on July 26.
On March 1, 2021, the City of Hogansville completed the fifth phase of its downtown Water Tower Trail, officially opening a new section that connects the trail’s existing outdoor classroom to the downtown core. Phase five began as a priority project listed in the 2021-2041 Hogansville Comprehensive Plan, funded by a $200,000 grant from the Georgia Recreation Trails Program (RTP) and other local funds.
Getting its name from the historic castle-like water tower built in 1914 to serve a local cannery, the water tower is not the only unique historic landmark located on the trail. Just below the tower is the granite amphitheater constructed by local men and youth as part of the 1930s National Youth Administration program. This trail highlights community landmarks and offers increased connectivity to key community facilities. Beginning at the Hogansville Elementary school, the trail winds around the historic concrete water tower which extends to the downtown post office and new city hall.
The project demonstrates the success of a phased approach to increase access to recreation and making a small-town amenity a reality. Future phases are planned and are included in a larger trail building effort by the city as seen in the Comprehensive Plan, 2018 Hogansville Downtown Master Plan, and the 2018 Hogansville Corridors Redevelopment Plan.
