DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson has announced the lifting of the State of Emergency that was declared due to severe winter weather conditions. The decision follows significant improvements in road conditions and successful efforts by emergency crews to address critical safety concerns throughout the county.
Despite the lifting of the emergency declaration, residents are advised to remain cautious, especially during evening and nighttime hours. Lingering ice and freezing temperatures continue to pose risks.
“As we return to normal operations, I want to thank the residents of DeKalb County for their patience and cooperation during this challenging time,” said CEO Cochran-Johnson. “Although conditions have improved, we urge everyone to exercise caution, especially after dark, as icy spots may persist.”
The National Weather Service has issued guidance for those who must travel. Residents are advised to drive with extreme caution after dark, proceed slowly, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. Melting snow and runoff from the afternoon are expected to freeze on roads at night, creating slick and dangerous conditions. Roads in shady areas, particularly secondary roads, hilly terrain, and north-facing slopes, remain ice-covered and hazardous through the night.
DeKalb County road crews and emergency responders have worked diligently to ensure public safety by deploying over 500 tons of road treatments and assisting stranded vehicles and residents. These efforts have contributed significantly to improving conditions that allowed for lifting the emergency declaration.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official DeKalb County communication channels for updates and guidance. Additional information can be found at www.dekalbcountyga.gov.
“Public safety remains our top priority,” added CEO Cochran-Johnson. “We are grateful for the hard work of our emergency teams and the community’s understanding during this weather event. Together, we’ve navigated this challenge and ensured the safety of our residents.”
