On April 14, 2025, during an exchange with CNN's Kaitlin Collins, former President Donald Trump suggested that the network holds animosity towards the nation. The remarks were made in the Oval Office during a meeting with El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele, where Trump criticized the media, stating, "CNN over there, doesn’t want to put them out because they don’t like putting out good numbers … because I think they hate our country. It’s a shame, really."

Back in the studio, the host Dana Bash responded to Trump's accusations. Visibly frustrated, she expressed her rebuttal, stating, "I just want to say for the record … CNN does not hate our country. That should go without saying. I’ve been here for 32 years. And I see a rhetorical device in him trying to say such a thing. That said, I want to focus on the news that we heard."

Bash's on-air response comes amidst criticism from some quarters who allege that CNN has long been critical of Trump's administration, leading to perceptions that the network harbors negative sentiments towards the country. These interactions highlight ongoing tensions between the former president and media outlets like CNN, known for their pointed exchanges throughout Trump's tenure.

This incident has sparked discussions on media objectivity, with opinions divided on CNN's portrayal of Trump’s policies and the network's reputation.
