Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer faced criticism after a photo surfaced from her recent visit to the White House. In the image, Whitmer is seen covering her face and hiding behind folders while President Trump addressed the press, according to a report from The Hill.

The meeting was initially intended as a discussion on tariffs and investment opportunities in Michigan's defense assets. However, Whitmer found herself unexpectedly brought into the Oval Office as President Trump signed an order, the topic of which was not disclosed to her prior, as per her spokesperson.

"The governor was surprised that she was brought into the Oval Office during President Trump’s press conference without any notice of the subject matter," Whitmer’s spokesperson explained to NewsNation.

Whitmer's office emphasized that her presence there did not imply endorsement of any actions or statements made during the event. Nevertheless, the image has sparked various responses.

In the photo taken by Times photographer Eric Lee, Whitmer is placed under portraits of Ben Franklin and Thomas Jefferson holding up blue folders to obscure her face.

The photograph gained additional attention across social media platforms, with commentary from users like Scott Jennings, who remarked, "Nobody this weak is ever going to be president," and Abigail Jackson, who stated, "This is so much worse than if she just let her photo be taken."

The incident has become a point of discussion, and some speculate it may impact any potential presidential aspirations Whitmer may have in the future.
